Golden Hind

An English Galleon captained by Sir Francis Drake and between 1577 and 1580 was said to have circumnavigated the globe. The Golden Hind began with the name “Pelican”. Later during the voyage of 1577 entering the Strait of Magellan Sir Francis Drake renamed her Golden Hind as a compliment to his patron Sir Christopher Hatton. The name came from his armorial crest; it was a golden “hind”, the heraldic term for a female deer.

Sir Francis Drake was selected by Elizabeth I of England to be the leader of an expedition to pass through the Strait of Magellan around South America then explore the coast beyond.

The Golden Hind Sir Francis Drake’s flagship displaced about 100 tons set sail in December with five small ships and they reached the Brazilian coast in the spring of 1578. Drake had the unofficial support of the Queen Elizabeth to benefit himself and to inflict the maximum damage to the Spaniards.

The Golden Hind captured the Spanish Galleon Nuestra Señora de la Concepción holding one of the largest treasures every recorded to date. She carried a bounty of 360,000 Pesos. It was no surprise that it took 6 days to transfer the six tons of treasure. Sailing back to Plymouth Harbor Queen Elizabeth went aboard and bestowed Knighthood on Drake. Her share of the treasure came to £160,000 more than enough to pay off her foreign debt. This left her £40,000 to invest in a new trading company which produced a return of 4700%.

The Golden Hind after Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation was put on public exhibition in Deptford. One of the very first known ships to be placed on public exhibition, she remained on public display for 100 years before she rotted away.

One claim is that a table and a chair located in the Middle Temple Hall in London made from the wood of the Golden Hind. The chair is said to be in the Great Hall, Buckland Abby, Devon.

Model Ship Class Supercarrier

Supercarrier Class Aircraft Carriers

Aircraft carriers of the largest type are given the unofficial term “Supercarrier” generally referring to Aircraft carriers displacing over 70,000 long tons. Not many countries operate medium aircraft carriers like the Charles de Gaulle, we see more light Aircraft carriers around the 20,000 ton class like the HMS Illustrious. Supercarriers held the title along with some oil tankers as the largest ships in the world until the more recent cruise ships. The newer mammoth ships over 1000’ ft long like the Voyager class cruise ships and even larger Freedom class which are 1,020 ft. long and are more than 137,000 gross tons. MS Voyager of the Seas and the larger Queen Mary 2 are the largest ships in the world today.

The New York Times described the HMS Ark Royal in 1938 as a Supercarrier first. The unofficial classification moved to the Midway class carriers in 1943 double in tonnage 45,000 ton carriers. Then latter on post war Supercarriers migrated to the USS Forrestal proposed as standard for the United States.

The USS Forrestal displaced 60,000 tons dubbed by the American press as the first operational Supercarrier.
Some may argue that the armored Japanese carrier Shinano of World War II might be considered a Supercarrier. Possibly but she lacked some of the defining characteristics like arrestor wires, angled flight decks and most of all catapults. Her job was only an auxiliary support carrier and was never meant to be a multi-purpose fleet strike carrier like the US carriers. Like the USS Kitty Hawk, USS Forrestal class and USS Enterprise class are designated.

The Ulyanovsk of the Soviet Union would have been comparable in size the the American Supercarriers but at 40% complete they canceled her in 1991. She would have been an 85,000 ton nuclear aircraft carrier. This occurred due to post cold-war funding cuts as well as the planned sister ships to the Ulyanovsk.

The Santa Maria

Santa Maria

The largest of the three ships The Santa Maria de la Inmaculada Concepción, The Immaculate Conception of Mary, was used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. The Santa Maria’s master and owner was Juan de la Cosa.

Known as a carrack or “nao” The Santa Maria was about 70 feet long Columbus used her as his flagship for the expedition. There were about 40 men that manned her crew. She was constructed of wood from the Bialowieza forest from pine and oak.

Columbus’ expedition included 2 other ships of the caravel-type. The Santa Clara was the name of one of the other 2, which everyone would remember as The Nina. This means “The Girl” a joke on the name of her owner Juan Nino. Then there was the Pinta which means “The Painted” thought to refer to her excessive makeup. The three ships were second hand and never meant to be used for exploration.

La Gallega which means “The Galician” was The Santa Maria’s original name. She was constructed in Pontevedra, Galicia and her sailors knew her as Marigalante, which is Spanish for “Gallant Mary”.

The Santa Maria was the slowest of the three ships had a single deck and three masts. She performed very well in the Atlantic crossing. The old girl ran aground off what is known today as Mole Saint-Nicolas, Haiti in December of 1492 on Christmas day and was lost. Her timbers were salvaged and used to build Mole Saint-Nicolas. Originally they called it La Navidad meaning Christmas because the grounding occurred on Christmas Day.

Many believed that this historic voyage was composed of criminals but this is untrue. It is known that the Spanish Sovereigns offered amnesty to convicts who would sign up for the voyage, but only four men took up the offer: one who had killed a man in a fight, and three of his friends who then helped him escape from jail. Columbus’ crew consisted of many experienced seamen from the town of Palos and the coastal area of Galici.

Some of the crew members were also from Andalusia. The voyage money came from the syndicate of seven Genovese bankers in Seville.

There are no known reproductions of the Santa Maria but we have located some of the top models of what she is believed to have looked like. She would make a fine addition to anyone’s collection or displayed in a Hotel lobby or fine Restaurant.

French Ship Soleil Royal

Soleil Royal (1670)

The flagship of Admiral Tourville the Soleil Royal (Royal Sun) was a French ship with 104 guns. They built her in Brest sometime between 1669 and 1670. She was built by an engineer named Laurent Hubac and they launched her in 1670. She sat in the Brest harbor for years. When the War of the Grand Alliance broke out in 1688 they re-commissioned her with 112 guns and 1200 men. She was the flagship of Escadre du Ponant which meant (squadron of the Ponant).

It was told she was a good sailing ship and a sight to behold with decorations that were some of most elaborate of all baroque flagships. Louis XIV chose the emblem of the “SUN” as his personal symbol.

The Soleil Royal departed Brest on 22 June 1690 as flagship of Anne Hilarion de Tourville. She spent three days in Camaret-sur-Mer waiting for favorable wind before sailing to Isle of Wight where the English fleet was thought to be anchored.

The Battle of Beachy Head (known in french as "Bataille de Béveziers") began in the morning of the 10 July 1690 when the French surprised the English ships anchored. Soleil Royal led the centre of the French formation.

The Soleil Royal left Brest May 12, 1692 in the lead of a 45 vessel fleet. By surprise they met and English and Dutch fleet 97 ships strong known as the Battle of Barfleur. Greatly outnumbered the French attacked causing the enemy to flee with huge losses.

The Soleil Royal was severely damaged in spite of the tactical victory and returned to Brest. There she was beached in Cherbourg for repairs with the Admirable and Triomphant.

The Soleil Royal met her end in the Battle of La Hougue sometime during the night June 2nd and 3rd at the Pointe Du Hommet. She was attacked by 17 ships and she did manage to repel them with artillery fire. But, a fire-ship set her stern on fire and the fire soon reached the powder rooms. Even with the population of Cherbourg coming to the rescue, there was only one survivor among the strong crew of somewhere between 883 and 950 men.

The Soleil Royal lies buried beneath a parking space next to the Arsenal today.

The USS Constitution

USS Constitution

A three-masted heavy frigate had a wooden hull The USS Constitution belongs to the United States Navy. American President George Washington named her after the Constitution of the United States. She still holds the title of the oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat in the world. The Naval Act of 1794 authorized six frigates to be built and in 1797 the Constitution was one of them. The frigates were to be the Navy’s capital ships, Designed by Joshua Humphreys. The USS Constitution and her sister ships were very heavily armed which made them larger than the standard frigates of the day.

Edmund Hartt’s shipyard in Boston, Massachusetts built the USS Constitution. With the newly formed United States Navy her first duty was providing protection for American merchant shipping. This occurred during the Quasi War with the France defeating the Barbary pirates in the first Barbary war.

The War of 1812 against Great Britain was her most famous era of naval warfare. The USS Constitution defeated five British warships; HMS Cyane, HMS Guerriere, HMS Levant and the HMS Java. It was the battle with the HMS Guerriere that she earned the nickname of “Old Ironsides”.

The USS Constitution served as the Nations Flagship. She circled the world in the 1840s. She served as a training ship during the American Civil War for the United States Naval Academy. In 1881 she retired from active service and served as a receiving ship until she got the designation as a museum ship in 1907. She made a 90 port tour over three years in 1931 and then again in 1997 she sailed again for her 200th birthday under her own power.

To this very day she still has the mission to promote understanding of the Navy’s role in peace and war time. She does this through educational outreach, active participation in public events and historic demonstrations.

To this very day the USS Constitution is still a fully commissioned US Navy ship. She carries a crew of 60 officers and sailors that participate in special events, ceremonies and educational programs. They also provide free tours year round keeping her open to visitors. All the crew and officers are all active duty US Navy special duty.

She is still a real beauty to this very day. We have located a number of wonderful reproductions and models of the USS Constitution to add to or start a collection.

The RMS Titanic

RMS Titanic

An Olympic class passenger liner the RMS Titanic was owned by the White Star Line. She was constructed at Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. She was the largest passenger ship in the world in her day.
The RMS Titanic was designed to compete with Cunard Line’s Lusitania and Mauretania. The grand plan was for The Titanic with her sister ships the Olympic and to build soon Britannic, were to be the largest, most luxurious ships to ever set sail.

The most advanced technology of the day was used to build The RMS Titanic. She was believed to have been described and an unsinkable ship.

It was during The TMS Titanic’s maiden voyage she hit an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the Atlantic two hours and forty minutes later. 1517 souls were lost from the 3547 on board due to her sinking. The shipping regulations of the time did not require lifeboats for everyone on board.

Real media frenzy ensued after the sinking of The RMS Titanic because of all the famous victims. Many legends spawned about the sinking. So good did come out of it though. Many changes to maritime law concerning safety of passengers have been added to the books since.

Since Dr. Robert Ballard’s discovery September 1, 1985 of the wreck much interest in the fame of The RMS Titanic lives on today.

The Construction of The RMS Titanic was funded by American J.P. Morgan and his International Mercantile Marine Company. The Hull of the Titanic was launched May 31, 1911 and she was completely outfitted by the following year. Her dimensions were 882 feet and 9 inches long and 92 feet wide. She topped the scales with a register tonnage of 46,328 tons. From the water line she reached into the sky 59 feet.

She was powered by two reciprocating four-cylinder, triple-expansion, inverted steam engines and one low-pressure Parsons Turbine, which turned three propellers. She had 29 boilers fired by 159 coal burning furnaces that made a top speed of 23 knots (26 mph). Only three of the four 62 feet smoke stacks called funnels were functional. The fourth, which served only as a vent, was added to make the ship look more impressive. The ship could carry a total of 3,547 passengers and crew and, because she carried mail, her name was given the prefix RMS (Royal Mail Steamer) as well as SS (Steam Ship).

In her day, Titanic surpassed all rivals in luxury and opulence. She offered an on-board swimming pool, a gymnasium, a Turkish bath, libraries in both the first and second-class, and a squash court. First-class common rooms were adorned with ornate wood paneling, expensive furniture and other decorations. In addition, the Café Parisian offered cuisine for the first-class passengers, with a sunlit veranda fitted with trellis decorations.

With the mystery surrounding the Titanic she will make quite the conversation piece for any den or upscale Restaurant or old-world Hotel.

The Cutty Sark

Cutty Sark

The finest in a clipper ship the Cutty Sark was built in 1869 and was to serve as a merchant vessel. The very last clipper to be built as a merchant vessel and was later used as a training vessel. It is still possible to see her today preserved and in dry dock in Greenwich, London. She is the last remaining original Clipper Ship preserved from the 1800s.

Cutty Sark the ships name has quite a story to go with such a beautiful sailing vessel. What a cutty sark of the day was suppose to be was a short chemise or undergarment. In the day there was also a fictional character Nannie Dee from a Robert Burns’ 1791 comic Tam O’ Shanter. The Nannie Dee Character became the Cutty Sark’s figurehead. In the comic she wore a cutty sark from childhood that was way too small. This sight of her dancing in the small undergarment caused Tam to cry out “Weel done, Cutty-Sark”.

The Cutty Sark designed by Hercules Linton in Dumbarton Scotland by the Scott & Linton Company. The ship was built for Captain John “Jock” “White Hat” Willis. The Company Scott & Linton was liquidated and the Cutty Sark was completed by William Denny and Brothers for John Willis and Son.

The beautiful clipper ships quickly lost out to the newer steamships of the day. It was found they could deliver goods more reliably, but not as quickly. The Cutty Sark was faster than steamships and was said to be the fastest ship of her size. She once sailed 360 nautical miles in 24 hours with an average speed of 15 knots per hour.

John Willis sold her to a Portuguese firm Ferreira. They renamed her Ferreira after the Company, the crew referred to her as Pequena Camisola meaning “little shirt” which was a translation of the Scots “cutty sark”. Dismasted off the Cape of Good Hope she was re-rigged in Cape Town as barquentine and renamed The Maria Do Amparo. Captain Wilfred Dowman bought her in 1922 and restored her to her original beauty. From then on she was used as a stationary training ship in Greenhithe, Kent. They built her a custom dry dock in Greenwich, London and moved her there in 1954 which she remains today.

HMS Bounty

HMS Bounty made famous as the scene of the Mutiny on the Bounty on 28 April 1789, was originally a three-masted cargo ship the Bethia. The Bethia was purchased by the British Admiralty in May of 1797 and then modified and commissioned as His Majesty's Armed Vessel the Bounty for a botanical mission to the Pacific Ocean.

She was a relatively small sailing ship at 215 tons, three-masted and full-rigged. After conversion for the breadfruit expedition, she was mounted with only four cannons, four pounders and ten swivel guns. She was very small in comparison to other three-mast Colliers used for similar expeditions.

The ship purchased by the Royal Navy for a single mission in support of an experiment. The plan was for her to sail to Tahiti, pick up breadfruit plants, and transport them to the West Indies in hopes that they would grow well there and become a cheap source of food for slaves. The Grand Experiment was proposed by Sir Joseph Banks, who recommended William Bligh as commander, and was promoted through a prize offered by the Royal Society of Arts.

The HMS Bounty was refitted in June 1787, at Deptford. The large cabin was converted to house the potted breadfruit plants, and gratings were fitted to her upper deck. Her complement was 46 officers and men.

Commanding Lieutenant William Bligh’s Description of the Ship Was:

"The Burthen of the Ship was nearly 215 Tons; Her extreme length on deck 90ft 10 in. & breadth from outside to outside of the bends 24ft 3 in. A Flush deck & a pretty Figure Head of a Woman in Riding Habit; She mounted 4 four pounders & 10 Swivels & her Complement was,

William Bligh was appointed Commanding Lieutenant of Bounty on 16 August 1787, at the age of 33, after a career that included a tour as sailing master of James Cook's Resolution during Cook's third and final voyage (1776-1779).

HMS Sovereign of the Seas

HMS Sovereign of the Seas was ordered in August 1634 at the whim of Charles I of England, who desired a giant Great Ship to be built. The decision brought on a lot of opposition from the Brethren of Trinity House. They were eager to point out that "There is no port in the Kingdome that can harbor this ship".

The wild sea must be her port; her anchors and cables will keep hold her safety. So if either fail, the ship must perish, the King will lose his jewel, four or five hundred man must die, and maybe some great and noble peer.

The King overcame the objections with the help of John Pennington and beginning May 1635 she was built by Peter Pett. Built under the guidance of his father Phineas, the kings master shipwright. The HMS Sovereign of the Seas was launched at Woolwich Dockyard on Oct 13. 1637. Peter Pett later became a Commissioner of the Navy.

HMS Sovereign of the Seas the most extravagantly decorated warship of the Royal Navy. She was adorned from bow to stern with gilded carvings against black background by John and Mathias Christmas from a design of Anthony Van Dyke. All the money spent on her created a financial crisis for Charles I and contributed to the English Civil War.

The Sovereign of the Seas was not so much built because of tactical considerations, but as a deliberate attempt to bolster the reputation of the English crown. Her name was in itself a political statement as Charles tried to revive the perceived ancient right of the English kings to be recognized as the 'lords of the seas.'

French & English Prisoners Began Building Model Ships

During the Napoleonic wars French and English seamen who were taken prisoner were confined, sometimes for many years, and in their boredom sought relief by building ship models from scraps of wood and bone. Model ship building history evolved into something of an art form and the models were sold to the public which responded by supplying the prisoners with ivory so that the models would be more decorative. For the most part, the models had carved wooden hulls with rigging made from human hair, horsehair, silk, or whatever other fine material could be obtained. Bone or ivory would be used for masts, spars and as a thin veneer over the hull.

Britain's Naval Supremacy

Britain's naval supremacy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was of wide public interest in ships and models of the ships. Model ship building history also began with fairly crude models that were built as children's toys leading to the creation of the functional model ships, as opposed to decorative ship models. Britain most likely led the world in model ship sailing clubs. Starting around 1838 the Serpentine Sailing Society was started in Hyde Park. Shortly after followed by the first London Model Yacht Club in 1845. By the 1880s there were three model sailing clubs sharing the Kensington Gardens Round Pond alone.

European Ship Models

European ship models date back to the 12th through the 15th centuries. Some of these early models were galleys, galleons and carracks found mounted in churches. They were used to bless the ships and the crew that sailed them.

European small craft and many larger vessels were constructed without formal plans. What the shipwrights would do for prospective customers, they would build a model ship. They would do this to illustrate their building techniques to give the customer and idea how the full size ship would look.

Admiralty Model Ships

Admiralty model ships were built for the Royal Navy in the 18th and 19th centuries to portray the warship designs. These models did not illustrate the actual timbering or framing, they did show the form of the hull and usually had great detail of the deck furnishings, masts, spars, and the overall configuration. Some of these models ship were real artwork decorated with carvings of great beauty. It is believed they were constructed by teams of artisans. Admiralty models ship served to educate civilians who were involved in the financing.
