The Gorch Frock is a three mast barque and a sister ship of the Horst Wessel and the Albert Leo Schlageter. The Gorch Frock proved to be a very successful proven ship design. Being the first is a series of five ships built by Blohm & Voss. The original three ships built only the Mircea is a replica of the same design. The Horst Wessel and the Albert Leo Schlageter were somewhat different and were 7 meters longer and had auxiliary engines that were more powerful.
The Gorch Frock was taken by the USSR as war reparations after World War II and promptly renamed Tovarishch. She served under a Ukrainian flag and in the 90s after a prolonged stay in a British port because of a lack of funds for repairs she was acquired by a new sponsor and sailed to her home port of Stralsund. By November 2003 her original name was restored to Gorch Frock.
She has been restored to her original beauty after extensive repairs in 2008. Designated as a museum ship after her restoration she sailed to the port of Belfast in April of 2009 and the public was allowed to board her to view the vessel.
The Gorch Frock was launched May 3rd of 1933 and named in honor of German writer Johann Kinau that wrote under a pseudo name “Gorch Frok”. Johann Kinau was killed in the Battel of Jutland aboard the cruiser Wiesbaden.
The German Navy commissioned the “Gorch Frock” a three masted barque June 26th 1933. Her fore and main sails are square and she is gaff rigged on the mizzen. With her steel and sparred length of 269 feet she displaces 1510 tons.
She was designed primarily as a training ship meant to be safe against capsizing and very robust. This was accomplished with an extra 300 tons of ballast that provided righting moment large enough to bring her upright even if she heels over at 90°.
Originally she served the German Richsmarine as a training vessel prior to World War II. She served as a stationary office ship during the war and by 1944 she was officially reactivated April 19th 1944. The crew scuttled her in shallow water off Rügen to avoid capture by the Soviets.
The Soviets salvaged her and had her restored between 1948 and 1950. The Soviets renamed her The Tovarishch which means (“Comrade” in Russian). By 1951 she was put into service as a training vessel. The Tovarishch’s home port was Odessa. She sailed around the world in 1957 participated in a number of Tall Ship races. She even won the Operation Sail Race twice in 74 and 76.
